The human world
For the human world, I was inspired by Japanese animated movies. The scenery is always so vibrant and pleasing to the eye. For my visual research, I decided to look at Ghibli’s style of creating backgrounds.

They are the masters of creating fantastical yet believable worlds. The main part I took from Ghibli was the colour palette. Because the colours they choose harmonize and complement each other perfectly.

The Spirit World
For the spirit world, we wanted the environment to look different from the human world. We wanted the switching mechanic to be instantly noticeable and the best thing to do was to change the whole colour palette. Therefore I decided to look up sceneries with unusual colours in the background.

The Legend of Korra
I started my research with Korra because in the series there is a spirit world that resembles our one. In Korra, the spirit world is more vibrant than the human world. The colour palette is more saturated and the colours are brighter. I noted that and used those techniques for the backgrounds for our game.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure for the first time, I saw the use of different colours of the sky. I was surprised because I’ve never seen a show using that technique. After a while, I got used to the use of the unique colours of the sky. I thought it was quite original and decided to experiment with the colours of the sky in the spirit world. It turned out looking good and I was pleasantly surprised.
The feel

Dororro
A while back I remember watching Dororro a Japanese animated series about a ronin on a journey to defeat demons. The series is set in a feudal Japan so it was a perfect choice to get some pointers how to create a world with humans and demons. We want the player to feel the excitement of being on a journey, not knowing where they going just to be surprised by the next thing they going go come across. Dororro was a great choice because it helped us visualise the different aspects of Reikon's world.
The Mask

Demon slayer
While watching Demon Slayer I came across this character and the style of the mask caught my attention. It’s simple but pleasing to the eye. What I took from it was various shades of red and I used them in the final versions on the mask and the logo.
I created multiple Pinterest boards with visual inspirations and tutorials I followed throughout the whole game making process. Click the links to check it out.
